Originally by: Tyranne I believe that you show more of your true self online than you do offline. I know that sounds a little strange, but let me explain:
In "real life", your actions have concequences that will affect you greatly. Thus, you wouldn't go up to a random person on the street, beat the crap out of them, and threaten them with their life if they don't give you $2,000 on the spot.
However, there are no life-changing consequences for your actions in EVE, so you can "let loose" online, doing things that you wouldn't normally do. I find it unlikely that people would put forth extra effort to be something they're not while playing the game. Considering that the game world is a place to relax, it isn't going to be the place for "being fake".
As for people who pirate other players, and hide behind the defense of "it's just a game so don't be mad about it", that's a very weak defense. It's NOT just a game, it's time invested. When someone plays the game, they're putting time into sculpting a game character to their liking. Hindering that or setting them back is a justified cause for anger, especially since the game is pay-to-play monthly. The old saying "time is money" really does apply here.
qft.
If anyone thinks that their online actions dont relate to their rl ethics or rl charateristics, they are a bit off their rocker in my book.
If you feel all warm and fuzzy inside after podding a newbie, you should probably sue your parents.
I work in RL, as a occupational Theraphist....I help people every day, who have been damaged by either accidents, Violence or disease.
Both My parrents are upstanding individuals in their communities. I had a good upbringing, got a good education. My thrills in RL, is diving and travelling.
I am not a convicted criminal. People who know me from ingame, would proberly say "he is a really nice guy"
All these arguments, puts your "catch phrase", into the ground.
I woud say, in a professional view, If you dont know anyhting about psycology, dont try to use it or put forth any unfounded theories, which are notbacked by hard fact evidence.
One or two times, every year, me and a RL friend, who also plays this game, arranges a EVE meeting in Copenhagen, it has been quite popular. We have just finished with the 8th official EVE Gankaton(TM) in Copenhagen last weekeend. The last two times, we have had around 100 EVE players attending, NEVER....Never has there been any trouble, anyone beating another player up, No Harsh words, No Threats......Only fun and good company.
At these events we have players from all over EVE, every alliance almost, enemies and frinds ingame...We have very succesfull EVE serial killers at our meetings, we have some of the Best PvP'ers, constructors, traders, missonrunners attending. We have People, from as far as England,US,Norway,Sweden,Poland, Germany...infact from most European countries.
They all meet up out of game, for one reasson, their common love of this game. Allthough enemies ingame, they share a hearty tale and a cold one out of game.
Why ? Because its a game, its not RL.........
You will always, in communities as big as EVE, find someone who redifines these rules, as in RL, there are all sort of people playing EVE.
But remember is only a game, if you cannot see the difference, unplug your keyboard, find another hobby.
I for one will not change my ingame predatorian habits, I think they are fun
PS: Your not your ship.
EDIT: Stupid forums didn't put what I typed.
QFT Awesome post.
Anyone who thinks people in real life act like they do in game are just stupid or mad that someone blew them up. ___
